SDHmini-Ex: Fast, Repeatable Trace‑Moisture Measurement for Natural Gas and Process Gas

Accurate trace moisture data in demanding operating conditions, such as process gas and natural gas applications, depends on a handheld instrument that responds quickly and performs consistently.

The SDHmini-Ex is built for exactly that environment, supporting rapid spot checks, stable readings and straightforward data handling across natural gas and process gas applications.

Portable performance for field work

The SDHmini-Ex delivers ±2°C (±3.6°F) accuracy across a practical handheld range of −100°C to +20°C dew point (−148°F to +68°F). This span covers routine checks at TEG dryer outlets and pipeline compliance work, while also providing the range needed for troubleshooting dryer systems.

Readings can be viewed directly in ppm(v), lb/MMSCF or °F/°C dew point, allowing results to align with site practice and reporting requirements.

Desiccant dry-down for faster stable readings

Moisture measurements can be slow to stabilise if sensor lines or fittings have been exposed to excess moisture or ingress. Over-saturation caused by contact with ambient air can lead to sluggish response and longer dry-down recovery times.

The desiccant dry-down chamber integrated into Shaw portable hygrometers, including the SDHmini range, helps isolate the sensor environment and quickly drive the sensor back towards dry conditions. This supports faster recovery and rapid response to trace moisture in the sample gas, with reduced purge and waiting time.

AutoCal for fast verification

A unique feature of Shaw instruments is AutoCal, the automatic calibration function. Regular calibration to recognised international standards such as NIST or NPL remains essential for compliance and best practice, but in many applications it is not practical to recalibrate between every use.

AutoCal provides a useful way to check sensor performance more frequently. If an anomaly is detected, the ability to perform AutoCal quickly can help rule out sensor damage and avoid, or minimise, unnecessary operational shutdown.

The procedure is controlled and repeatable directly on the instrument, providing reliable performance confirmation with less disruption. This is particularly useful during planned maintenance windows and before critical QA activities such as custody transfer checks or outage work.

Built for hazardous locations and portable use

The SDHmini-Ex is designed for safe, practical use in the field. Key features include UL, ATEX and IECEx intrinsic safety certification, allowing technicians and engineers to work with confidence in hazardous areas.

It also offers a long-life rechargeable battery with more than 150 hours between charges, data logging for 300,000 readings across multiple locations, and USB and Bluetooth connectivity for simple data transfer to maintenance systems and compliance records.

Portable Sample System for reliable data quality

The SDH-PSS Portable Sample System is designed to support fast, accurate and repeatable dew point measurement of gases and dry compressed air.

It helps maintain reliable sampling conditions and reduces the risk of contamination, ingress and absorption through filtration, flow control and pressure regulation. Its compact, powder-coated stainless-steel assembly makes commissioning, troubleshooting and periodic QA work efficient without the need for fixed infrastructure.
