Beryllium Strategic Raw Material for Defence
Beryllium is one of 12 strategic raw materials named by NATO in December 2024 as essential to the defence industry. Reliable supply of beryllium and its alloys matters. With more than 50 years in high performance copper alloys, NGK Berylco supplies strip, wire, rod, plate and block from its European operations, with a dedicated UK office in Salford for local support.
Beryllium's strategic importance is recognised at the highest level. In December 2024, NATO published a list of 12 strategic raw materials essential to the defence industry, and beryllium is on it, for its role in electronic components, guidance systems and weapons. Secure supply from an established European producer counts.
Beryllium copper alloys perform well under the extreme operating conditions of defence telecommunications, radar, missile guidance and pilot assistance systems. They are used in connectors for military aircraft and in electrical and electronic equipment for naval and grou
The core Berylco grades are C17200 (CuBe2, Berylco 25) for high strength, C17300 (CuBe2Pb, Berylco 33/25) for free machining and C17510 (CuNi2Be, Berylco 14) for high conductivity. Where a beryllium-free option suits better, the GMX copper-nickel-tin range covers it. NGK's technical team can help match grade, temper and form to the job.
NGK Berylco is certified to ISO 9001, EN 9100, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. It also runs a scrap recycling and buyback programme, remelting recovered material into alloy of identical composition.
