Beryllium Torsion Resistance
Beryllium torsion resistance helps components stay true under twisting loads, an advantage in shafts, frames and optical mounts. With more than 50 years in high performance copper alloys, NGK Berylco supplies UK, Irish and Nordic customers through its Salford office, backed by the wider NGK Group.
Beryllium metal combines properties that no other metal matches. With a density of about 1.85 g/cm³ it is roughly a third lighter than aluminium, yet around six times stiffer than steel and highly resistant to torsion. It conducts heat and electricity well, at over 40% IACS, resists corrosion and acids, is non-magnetic and anti-sparking, and barely oxidises. It melts at around 1,287 °C.
Beryllium is a specialist material and it pays to work with a specialist supplier. Discovered in 1798 and named after the mineral beryl, it is extracted mainly from bertrandite and beryl and has been on the EU list of critical raw materials since 2011. Reliable sourcing, controlled processing and proper documentation all matter.
Aerospace leaves no margin for error. A single commercial aircraft can carry more than 40,000 connectors, and every one has to perform for decades under vibration, temperature swings and corrosion. NGK Berylco's EN 9100 certification shows it understands what the sector demands.
NGK Berylco supplies pure beryllium as windows, mirrors and other components. Beryllium is about 17 times more transparent to X-rays than aluminium at the same thickness, which makes it the standard material for X-ray windows in medical and security imaging. Beryllium mirrors serve advanced optical applications, and other components draw on its light weight, stiffness, non-magnetic and nuclear properties.
NGK Berylco also runs a scrap recycling and buyback programme. Recovered material is remelted into alloy of identical composition, which cuts waste and helps customers hit their sustainability targets. All of this sits under ISO 9001, EN 9100, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
