Beryllium for Security Imaging
Beryllium for security imaging helps scanners see clearly into bags, parcels and cargo. With more than 50 years in high performance copper alloys, NGK Berylco supplies UK, Irish and Nordic customers through its Salford office, backed by the wider NGK Group.
NGK Berylco supplies pure beryllium as windows, mirrors and other components. Beryllium is about 17 times more transparent to X-rays than aluminium at the same thickness, which makes it the standard material for X-ray windows in medical and security imaging. Beryllium mirrors serve advanced optical applications, and other components draw on its light weight, stiffness, non-magnetic and nuclear properties.
Beryllium is a specialist material and it pays to work with a specialist supplier. Discovered in 1798 and named after the mineral beryl, it is extracted mainly from bertrandite and beryl and has been on the EU list of critical raw materials since 2011. Reliable sourcing, controlled processing and proper documentation all matter.
Security screening depends on clear, reliable imaging. Beryllium's transparency to X-rays makes it an important material in the scanners used at airports and other secure sites.
Beryllium metal combines properties that no other metal matches. With a density of about 1.85 g/cm³ it is roughly a third lighter than aluminium, yet around six times stiffer than steel and highly resistant to torsion. It conducts heat and electricity well, at over 40% IACS, resists corrosion and acids, is non-magnetic and anti-sparking, and barely oxidises. It melts at around 1,287 °C.
Buyers in regulated sectors need paperwork they can trust. NGK Berylco is certified to ISO 9001, EN 9100, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, with a dedicated laboratory and a product compliance programme behind its alloys.
