Requirements for commercial kitchen gas supplies are detailed in IGEM/UP1a and IGEM/UP/19 Edition 1 for gas safety requirements. These standards and guidance notes are very prescriptive defining the use of gas safety proving systems, gas detection and ventilation interlocks. IGD produce safety systems specifically targeted at gas detection in commercial kitchens, ventilation interlocks and gas safety interlocks.
PGF-30 from IGD is a modular solution for kitchen gas safety. At the heart of the system is the PGF-30 controller itself. The controller and its supplied pressure transmitter is used to control the gas supply to the kitchen via a gas solenoid valve. The controller ‘proves’ the integrity of the downstream kitchen gas supply by introducing a small amount of gas and then monitoring the pressure to ‘prove’ the system is leak tight. When the controller determines all is well the main supply is switched on. Should the pressure fall then the system will alert to check for leaks (open gas taps etc). PGF-30 uses a pressure transducer to directly measure the kitchen gas pressure and does not use more common pressure switches.
Reading back the actual pressure has a number of advantages. On installation PGF-30 can ‘learn’ the system automatically with no need for time consuming engineer adjustments, improving performance by reducing errors. As pressure is directly measured in milli-Bars the system can also alarm on low running pressure, adding extra levels of safety. Proving time is also reduced whilst providing better leak detection sensitivity. PGF-30 can also be interlocked with the kitchen ventilation system using IGD’s own ventilation flow sensor. The sensor directly measures airflow in the ducting providing excellent reliability and with none of the problems associated with pressure switches and current monitors. PGF-30 has a built in emergency stop switch and a key switch to prevent unintended operation. Additional Emergency stop switches can be easily added. PGF-30 uses IGD’s latest addressable technology. This means that additional sensors for CO2, Carbon Monoxide or Fuel gas leak detection can be easily added to the same gas proving controller (PGF-30).
PGF-30 is a comprehensive gas safety solution that can be scaled to the demands of each individual kitchen installation.
